Team Member Safety Employee Injury Dashboard
DescriptionEmployee injury reporting, data, analysis, and preventative actions related to Team Member Safety (TMS) employee injuries were variable and fragmented within our organization. Standardized employee injury data collection, along with data accessibility and transparency was needed to prioritize initiatives and drive improvement. An overhaul of the existing employee injury reporting form and the creation of the TMS employee injury dashboard was completed and made accessible to all staff within our organization to reduce employee injuries.

A group of key stakeholders met every two weeks with the Information Systems team for one year to review current employee injury reporting, data collection, and accessibility to identify barriers and opportunities. An overhaul of the existing employee injury reporting form was completed to accurately capture employee injury data. The workgroup then developed an interactive dashboard containing employee injury data that provides the data from our hospital event reporting system in real-time to all frontline staff and leaders. Data from the dashboard is then used to identify project priorities and create interventions to reduce employee injuries.

The Dashboard provides a visual analysis of employee harm caused by both environmental factors and patient behavioral events. Employee harm related to patient behavioral events in healthcare is increasing at an alarming rate in the United States, including in pediatric healthcare settings. In a survey published in the Journal of Pediatric Nursing, 73% of respondents reported experiencing at least one violent situation in the pediatric healthcare setting in the last 12 months (Derscheid & Arnetz, 2020.)

The Team Member Safety Employee Injury Dashboard went live in July 2023. Employee injury projects are now prioritized using the data from the Team Member Safety Employee Injury dashboard at the organization level. Frontline leaders and staff have direct access to their department’s employee injury data in real time. Department data is used by frontline leaders as metrics at their daily huddles and projects are implemented to improve safety and reduce staff injuries.

Approximately 50% of all reported employee injuries are related to patient/visitor behavioral events. Dashboard data is contingent on the accuracy of data entry in the RL Datix event reporting system. Providing an interactive dashboard with data in real-time to frontline staff is essential for its’ utilization and to improve safety.

Transparency and accessibility of accurate employee injury data allows employees and leaders at all levels to assess areas of concern and evaluate current processes. This helps to direct resources to drive process improvements within the organization, shifting focus to a more proactive approach to employee injury prevention.

The next steps for this project are to include a monthly review of the data at our Behavioral Health Advisory Committee to direct project prioritization. Phase 2 of the dashboard has started to break patient/visitor-initiated injury data down at the patient level to target interventions and improve safety.
