Pitch Perfect: Adapting Human Factors Elevator Pitches to Various Healthcare Stakeholders
DescriptionHuman Factors and Ergonomics (HF/E) has become increasingly integrated into many contexts throughout the domain of healthcare, including operationally embedded in hospitals, consulting, digital health, medical device companies, government/advocacy, and academia. However, many of the organizations and individuals we work with are unfamiliar with the field of HF/E. In many cases, we need to quickly and effectively share about the science and goals to demonstrate our value and purpose. We have developed succinct elevator pitches to effectively introduce HF/E to a range of different end-users.

The goal of this panel is to bring together a diverse set of HF/E practitioners within healthcare, including representation from consulting, government advocacy, academia, medical device companies, and hospital operations and research. The panelists will share their elevator pitches and how they’ve tailored these pitches over time to adapt to their unique contexts and their specific stakeholders. They will also demonstrate how to adapt their introductions for different audiences (e.g., Chief Financial Officers vs. frontline healthcare practitioners vs. professors from different industries), amounts of time (e.g., an elevator ride vs. an hour), goals (e.g., hiring, product purchasing, participating in a study), and familiarity with the field. Each panelist will also share what has worked well and lessons learned from less-successful introductions.

Many HF/E practitioners have limited exposure to how others form their introductions. Feedback from peers could be helpful to improve effectiveness of these pitches. Following the panelist presentations, we will provide space for session attendees to share and receive feedback on their own elevator pitches from both the panelists and other attendees.
