SUMMARY:Early Career Insights in Human Factors Engineering in the Medical
Field from Human Factors Industry Professionals
DESCRIPTION:Discussion Panel\n\nNeva Manalil, Madison Laskowski, and Chris
tine Cwieka (Design Science Group, LLC); Alexandra Benbadis (Sanofi); Mich
ael Boyce (Yale New Haven Health); Keai Yao (Regeneron); and Adam Werner (
Design Science Group, LLC)\n\nDesign Science is organizing a panel discuss
ion featuring Human Factors Engineering professionals working in the medic
al field who serve as experts in their field. As human factors engineering
in the medical field is still a relatively young industry, this panel aim
s to share experiences of established human factors professionals to those
looking to begin a career in the medical human factors engineering space.
The panelists will include human factors experts working across a broad r
ange of sectors, such as academia, industry, and consulting, who can pull
from their experiences and learnings to help guide future medical human fa
ctors engineers. The presentation of this panel would begin with an introd
uction to each panelist where each panelist would provide a brief descript
ion of their background and the steps taken for them to reach their curren
t role. A focus will be made to touch on pivotal career moments that helpe
d shape their professional journey, providing valuable insight for those l
ooking to follow a similar path. After the introduction of the panelists,
the moderator would begin the discussion with questions for each panelist
to answer. Topics covered will include questions such as, “What experience
s provided the greatest learning opportunity about human factors engineeri
ng in the medical field?” or “Who was the most impactful mentor you had du
ring your career, and what made them the most impactful?” Other key discus
sion points will include exploring the differences between the various sec
tors to pursue a career such as academia, industry, or consulting, how one
can break into the industry in each of those sectors, and exploring the d
ifferences and similarities between the skill sets needed in each sector.
At the conclusion of the panel, the moderator will open the conversation u
p to those in the audience, so no topic is left unexplored. Ideally, follo
wing the panel, there will be a coffee break allowing the panelists to be
available for one-on-one or small group discussion for those interested in
continuing the conversation. \nThe panel aims to make the exchange of ide
as as organic and interactive as possible, fostering enriching conversions
that encourage questions, thoughts, the exploration of various topics, an
d potential connections that can help us advance the field of human factor
s as a whole.\n\nTrack: Simulation and Education\n\nSession Chair: Neva Ma
