SE1 - Developing an Infographic for Young People on Breast Health and Wellness
DescriptionNot unlike other public health and wellness topics, information about breast cancer risk mitigation and screening is often inaccurate, lacks action-oriented guidance, and presented ineffectively. Particularly in October (breast cancer awareness month), through social media, we are inundated with such information that prioritizes awareness over vigilance and action. Underserved populations (racial and ethnic minorities) experience significant disparities in breast cancer outcomes (Emerson, et al., 2020; Miller-Kleinhenz, 2021). Additionally, young (under 40 years old) and pregnant/lactating women tend to have a higher rate of being dismissed by their providers, thereby experiencing diagnosis delays (Ali et al., 2012; Kalantarova et al, 2021), which could mean the difference between early stage (treatable) and metastatic (terminal) disease. Yet further, processes for high-risk individuals (under 40 years old) to receive screening and follow-up are inconsistent across institutions or altogether lacking (personal conversation with 2 medical breast oncologists). There is an urgent need for accurate, actionable, and effective messaging about breast cancer risk factors, risk mitigation, and screening.

We have conducted the following:
• Elicited knowledge from oncologists (n=5) & patients/survivors (n=35) via personal communication and social media
• Analyzed results (themes: dense breasts, know your risk factors, know your breasts, not always a lump, advocate for yourself)
• Developed message prototype(s) – to be presented on poster
• Developed visual prototype(s) – to be presented on poster
• Evaluated-refined iteratively
